The Regina Margherita Refuge has
obtained, following a period of intense activity by the Department
of Commodity Science and support by Grivel Mont Blanc, the UNI EN
ISO 14001 Certification for its environmental management system.
The Refuge, owned by the Italian Alpine Club's (CAI) Central Office,
is run by the CAI Varallo branch. Lying at 4552 metres, in the heart
of the Monte Rosa Massif, it is the highest refuge in Europe, a
popular stop for alpinists and also an important scientific research
site.
This success is due to the work carried out by Professor Riccardo
Beltramo and colleagues from the University of Turin in developing
a system of environmental management; following a period of trials
the system received official approval by Certiquality.
The Regina Margherita is CAI's first refuge to receives this recognition
and results from the Club's determination to reduce the environmental
impact of high mountain shelters; a theme subject to much debate
during 2002, International Year of the Mountains. The Refuge's certification
is included in the objectives of the Protocol Agreement, signed
by CAI and the Department of Commodity Science of the University
of Turin on the 20th December 2001, signalling the beginning of
a joint venture between the two organisations to study and implement
environmental management systems on alpine refuges.
As well as Grivel, the project obtained economic backing from La
Compagnia di San Paolo, La Fondazione della Cassa di Risparmio di
Torino and Lavazza Spa and the patronage of A.E.R.A - La Fondazione
Rotary per l'Ambiente. Other sponsors include Scarpa, Helly Hansen
and Les Lunettes
